Beauty & Rarity
The gold sheen sapphire, also known as the golden sheen sapphire, is a translucent gemstone with an attractive bronze-gold sheen that shimmers across its dark chocolate body color, sometimes accompanied by a blanket of blue-green hue. Multicolor gold sheen sapphires are truly mesmerizing. Discovered back in 2009 in Kenya, the exact location of the mine remains a closely guarded secret. Major laboratories, including the International Colored Gemstone Association and LOTUS Richard W. Hughes, have certified this variety of sapphire as rare and unique. The star variety of gold sheen sapphire has become increasingly rare in today’s market, and the rare shimmering appearance of this sapphire has earned it the LOTUS Golden Sheen distinction. Since 2014, the mine has apparently been depleted, making gold sheen sapphire/golden sheen sapphire extremely rare.
Gold Sheen Effect & Dark Veins
Most sapphires display a unique and peculiar golden sheen effect, resulting from the presence of platelets and acicular inclusions identified as an exsolution of hematite and ilmenite scattered in the stone matrix. The significant density of sheen inclusions essential to producing the golden sheen effect induces natural cracks in the stone. These surface-reaching fractures in the sheen area resemble random and asymmetric dark veins, generating unique patterns that add value to their beauty. Color The gold sheen effect and body color are the two elements that contribute to the beauty of the gold sheen sapphire. Available in yellow-green, blue, or a combination of these colors in different intensities and shades, most of the sapphires display a unique and peculiar golden sheen effect, a result of the presence of platelets and acicular inclusions identified as an exsolution of hematite and ilmenite scattered in the stone matrix.
Cutting Style and Sizes
The gold sheen sapphires are faceted or cut into cabochons, like all gemstones. The faceted gems come in various common fancy shapes. Due to the presence of the golden sheen effect in the stone, many stones are fashioned into checkerboard or rose cuts on the front side and have a flat face on the back. The cabochons are slightly flat to optimize the golden sheen effect but also deep if a star is being highlighted. Due to the nature of inclusions, a star in a cabochon gold sheen sapphire displays 6 rays, and its golden rays are parallel to the color zoning. The sizes of gold sheen sapphires range from less than a carat up to about 20 carats. Calibrated pieces weighing up to more than 300 carats can be cut. While small sizes are suitable for jewelry, the largest stones constitute collector or museum pieces.
Transparency & Treatment
The presence of the sheen inclusions near the surface of the gemstone influences its transparency. There is a direct relationship between the density of sheen inclusions along the c-axis of the sapphire and its transparency. The more dense the sheen, the more opaque the stone. Low density produces a fine gold sheen and a translucent stone. The overlap of a layer of yellow sapphire above sheen inclusions significantly enhances the golden color. In the case of a layer of blue sapphire with sheen inclusions, a blue sheen is created. The cutting and polishing of the rough stone are currently the only processes applied to gold sheen sapphire, making the stone natural with no indication of heat or any other type of treatment. Experimental heat treatment does not enhance the gold sheen effect or the possible 6-rayed stars, so there is no reason to apply any treatment to gold sheen sapphire, and all the stones are unheated and untreated. Price The prices of gold sheen sapphire have been increasing, making them a very good choice for investment. They have been sold in exhibitions all over the world for a price range of $800 to $1200 per carat. The price of rare and unique gold sheen sapphires is expected to rise further. Brands and Designers Using Gold Sheen Sapphire Several brands and designers are using gold sheen sapphire due to its beauty and rarity.
Brands and designers using Gold Sheen Sapphire:
Many renowned designers and brands, including John Hardy, David Yurman, William Travis, and Cartier, have incorporated Gold Sheen Sapphire or Golden Sheen Sapphire into their jewelry lines. Gold Sheen Sapphire is a rare variety of sapphire that comes in various colors and quality grades.

The versatility of Gold Sheen Sapphire rough results in various colors and shades, with standard colors such as Gold Sheen Copper, Gold Sheen Golden, and Gold Sheen Electrum being the most common, making up 80% of Gold Sheen. Blue, green, and yellow colors represent 10% of the yield from the rough, while rare and unique combinations of two colors like gold and blue, or golden green, are also found.
The quality of Gold Sheen Sapphire is determined by the intensity of colors, transparency, and the gold sheen phenomena. The standard qualities are described as Commercial, Good/Very Good, Fine/Extra Fine, Rare, and Exceptional Rare. A well-balanced transparency with an intense mix of multi-colors (blue, green, and gold) with a gold sheen effect and clear striations make a stone exceptionally rare and beautiful, often referred to as peacock feather Gold Sheen Sapphire. Gold Sheen Sapphire is available in various colors and qualities, with estimated market values per carat.
